Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) mother and calf, Azores, Portugal

Arkive not-for-profit initiative of the charity Wildscreen – Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus)

6. May 2018 0 comments Gallery photography, travel, various

I have donated one of my best underwater photos for the not-for-profit initiative Arkive. The image contains a Risso’s dolphin mother with her very young calf. The calf was so young – it wasn’t able to reach the water surface for air. The Risso’s dolphin mother pushed the young guy again and again in the direction of the water surface. This rare Risso’s dolphin encounter was one of my best as a photographer in my lifetime !

The scratches on the Risso’s dolphin bodies are coming from the fighting within the community. The young guy has no scratches until now, but starting fighting soon as possible. Only the strongest will survive in the wilderness.
