Manta Ray

23. September 2016

Mantas probably got the name devil ray because of the shape of their bodies. The two lobe-shaped head fins, the whip-like tail and the wing-shaped main fins, with which mantas fly with a ghostly elegance through the depths of the ocean, all excited the fantasies of people in centuries past. There were many horror stories of man-eating mantas told in the 18th and 19th centuries amongst sailors. The devil ray is however completely harmless for humans.
