Porto Portugals secret capital
After my time in the Azores, I am now visiting Porto and enjoying the last days of summer this year. The city in the north west of Portugal lies on the banks of the Douro near the Atlantic, and has around 350,000 inhabitants. Porto is world famous for its port. It not only gave the drink its name, but in fact the entire country of Portugal. The traditional boats are the city's emblem. The port used to be shipped out using them. I had a port tasting at Graham's. Porto's old city, the "Ribeira", was declared a UNESCO world cultural site in 1996. I spent the night in the old city - Praça da Ribeira - in the Pestana Porto Hotel with a view over the river Douro. The town is still relatively unknown to tourists, and has remained authentic. It enchants through its people and culture, through its old city and its location on the ricer. The secret capital is modern and traditional at the same time. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, but is less well known and famous than Lisbon.
