Bad weather on Pico
The last two days were very stormy and rainy, so we could not go out on the sea. Instead I visited tourist sights on Pico.
The Museum of Malcolm and Dorothy Clarke is lovingly arranged, and describes the lives of the sperm whales very well. The octopus model made of material, and the enormous anatomic sperm whale diagram were particularly good, I thought. The Museu dos Baleeiros (whalers' museum) describes traditional whaling as it was in the past, and one can only be glad that it is in the past in the Azores. Nowadays not only are the whales protected, but people no longer need to do the severe physical labour.
A new tourist attraction is the caves Fuma da Frei Matias. The volcanic activity on Pico has resulted in a unique cave system. As on every trip to Pico, I took a walk to the Vigía da Queimada and enjoyed the view over the sea. Dreamt of past experiences on the ocean, and wished for new ones in the coming days. The Vigía da Queimada will hopefully help me once again to discover the whales and dolphins far from the coast out to sea.
