Extinctions are accelerating

According to the World Conservation Union IUCN, extinctions are accelerating internationally. There are 530 new "candidates for death" on their Red List 2006, including even hippopotami and polar bears. I have already written on extinctions and on the Alliance for Zero Extinction. The extinctions are however not reported in the media world, and the general population tends to have relatively little interest in an intact nature. Pet dogs, gardens, circuses and zoos give some indication of most people's ideas of nature nowadays. In any case, humanity is more worried about the rising cost of natural resources than about the whole ecosystem, and how to bring the economy into balance with it. I cannot imagine that we can keep up economic growth in this manner, when all the oil has been burnt. There will be some replacement for the oil, but how will our ecosystem react? The damage that extreme weather has caused to our infrastructure is taken to be economically calculable so far.

It is sad to read so many speciae of animals are facing extinction. I am vegetarian and try to tell people when the topic is broached about the cruelty inflicted upon so many animals. Unfortunately these conversations typically occur while eating. Needless to say most people are not to receptive while digging into their chicken or beef.
