South Africa - Port St. Johns - Sardine Run 2006
After five wonderful days in Thanda Lodge, today I am heading to Port St. Johns on the "Wild Coast", for the "Sardine Run 2006". It is my second attempt in Port St. Johns, finally to experience the phenomenon of the "Sardine Run" live. The yearly event is difficult to predict, but normally happens between the middle and end of June. Some scientists suspect that the Sardine Run happens when the water temperature cools down to 19-20 degrees Celsius. The swarms of sardines naturally attract whales, dolphins and sharks for the great feast. My first try was in 2004, and I was very disappointed then. Our base is the Outspann Inn Hotel, which lies directly at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River.
