South Africa 2006 - Thanda Lodge - Sodwana Bay Hluhluwe
My flight with South African Airways to Johannesburg was unfortunately delayed by 4 hours, so I was forced to watch two World Cup football matches in Frankfurt Airport. There was no escape, you could even hear the typical noises in the toilets of the Lufthansa Lounge, and I found it very stressful to try and filter out the programme. I listened to a discussion briefly, but did not understand much, only that Poland has lost to Ecuador. A quote from the panel - whatever it means: "I am surprised by Ecuador's aggressive pressing".
Together with my open questions on football, and my light headache from the constant noise, I finally arrived in Johannesburg the following morning. The transfer by car from Johannesburg to Thanda Lodge took nearly 6 hours, as some of the sections of road in the way to Durban were being repaired. The arrival at Thanda Lodge made up for the long and stressful journey. It is not fully booked out, so I can finally enjoy nature in peace for a few days. The bungalows in Thanda Lodge are integrated in the animals' habitat, so an elephant may be eating grass in front of the bungalow, or rare birds drinking from the pool. My pictures of Thanda Lodge and the animals there will follow in the next posts. To get in the southern African mood, here are some pictures I made in Botswana (2003).
