Saxony’s South Sea – Leipzig’s Neuseenland

The Welt am Sonntag has today reported on my home region in Saxony. I grew up near Leipzig, Borna and Kitzscher. The region has become world famous for its brown coal open cast mining and exploitation of nature. The sulphur in the brown coal means that as well as the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and nitrogen monoxide, sulphur dioxide is also created. This gas reacts with water to form sulphuric acid, which has become well known mainly under the name of "acid rain". The sulphuric acids in particular accelerate the destruction of the forests and historical buildings in the old town centres of famous cities. After the brown coal has been mostly taken from the ground, the enormous areas were flooded with water. An artificial landscape of lakes was created, which now even attracts tourists for relaxation.
